Recruiters Question Whether Iced Coffee at Interviews Appears Unprofessional
A TikTok recruiter warned that bringing an iced coffee to a job interview may be seen as casual, sparking debate among hiring managers and Gen Z candidates about interview etiquette.
A TikTok recruiter with 16 years of experience at Fortune 500 firms cautioned that arriving at an interview with an iced coffee can give the impression that the meeting is just another errand. She said the beverage may suggest the candidate is treating the interview casually and could be perceived as unprofessional.
The comment sparked a wave of responses on social media, with some hiring professionals agreeing that a drink could leave a mess or create a noisy distraction, while others argued that candidates should be allowed to stay caffeinated. One Gen Z TikTok user expressed frustration at being judged for the habit, describing traditional etiquette as "corporate brainwashing."
LinkedIn News cited advice from a marketing professional who suggested that if a candidate wishes to bring a drink, it should be held in the left hand to keep the right hand dry for a handshake, and that the drink should be sipped quietly without shaking ice. A communications manager added that they would only accept water if offered, avoiding all other beverages during an interview.
Industry data shows that job postings for young adults aged 22 to 25 have fallen 13% since 2022 in sectors affected by AI, and a survey cited by a résumé website indicates that 41% of hiring managers view Gen Z candidates as lacking professionalism, with 30% noting concerns about distraction. Analysts suggest that in a tight labor market, small signals such as an iced coffee could influence hiring decisions.
