Typhoon Ragasa, the most powerful storm of 2025, has caused significant damage and loss of life across Taiwan, the Philippines, and southern China.
In Taiwan, the storm triggered severe flooding in Hualien County, resulting in at least 17 fatalities and 17 missing persons. The flooding was exacerbated by the collapse of a natural dam, which released a massive volume of water into the Guangfu township.
The Philippines reported at least 10 deaths, including fishermen who drowned at sea. Approximately 700,000 people were affected by the typhoon's impact.
Upon reaching southern China, Ragasa made landfall in Yangjiang, Guangdong province, with maximum winds of 89 mph. Nearly 2 million residents were evacuated as the storm caused widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and business closures, including casinos in Macau.
In Hong Kong, the typhoon brought the city to a standstill with ferocious winds and heavy rain, injuring at least 90 people and prompting 885 residents to seek refuge in temporary shelters.
Authorities across the affected regions continue to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts as the storm moves westward toward Vietnam.
