Nexstar and Sinclair Resume Airing 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' After Suspension
Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group have reinstated 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on their ABC affiliate stations following a suspension over the host's remarks on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group have resumed broadcasting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on their ABC affiliate stations, ending a suspension that affected numerous U.S. cities. The program was initially pulled after host Jimmy Kimmel made remarks concerning the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which led to controversy and a temporary suspension by Disney-owned ABC.
The suspension began on September 17, following Kimmel's comments that criticized President Donald Trump's response to Kirk's death. These remarks were perceived by some, including FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, as misleading. Sinclair had demanded an apology from Kimmel and a donation to Turning Point USA, the nonprofit founded by Kirk. Upon his return, Kimmel clarified his intentions and emphasized the importance of free speech but did not issue an apology.
Despite ABC lifting the suspension after less than a week, Nexstar and Sinclair continued to preempt the show for several more days. Facing public and political pressure, both companies cited their responsibility to provide programming that serves community interests and the importance of First Amendment protections in their decision to resume airing the show. Analysts noted that financial considerations, including Nexstar's pending $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna, may have influenced the reversal.
The blackout had impacted nearly a quarter of ABC affiliates, sparking broader debates about media censorship and political influence. The situation underscores the complex dynamics between national networks, local affiliates, and regulatory bodies in the broadcasting landscape.
