ABC Suspends 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Indefinitely Following Host's Remarks on Charlie Kirk's Death
ABC has indefinitely suspended 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' after the host's comments on Charlie Kirk's death prompted backlash and regulatory scrutiny.
ABC has indefinitely suspended "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" following remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During his monologue on Monday, Kimmel criticized the response to Kirk's assassination, stating, "The MAGA gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
The suspension came after Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 ABC-affiliated stations, announced it would preempt Kimmel's show indefinitely. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division, stated that Kimmel's comments were "offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse."
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr also criticized Kimmel's remarks, suggesting potential regulatory action against ABC and its parent company, Disney. Carr described the comments as "truly sick" and indicated a "strong case" for holding the network accountable for spreading misinformation.
President Donald Trump praised ABC's decision, writing on social media, "Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done."
Kimmel's representatives have not issued a statement regarding the suspension.
