Authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Robinson, a resident of Washington County, Utah, was taken into custody late Thursday night and is currently held without bail at Utah County Jail.
The arrest followed a tip from a family member who reported that Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the incident. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated, "I want to thank the family members of Tyler Robinson, who did the right thing in this case and were able to bring him into law enforcement."
Investigators recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to be the murder weapon, wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the campus. Bullet casings found at the scene bore inscriptions, including "Hey fascist! Catch!" and "Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao."
Robinson, who briefly attended Utah State University in 2021, had become more politically active in recent years, according to family members. Authorities believe he acted alone, but the investigation is ongoing.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was known for his role in energizing young Republican voters and co-founded the nonprofit political organization Turning Point USA.
President Donald Trump announced plans to honor Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him "a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people."
Formal charges against Robinson are expected to be filed early next week.
