Manhunt Intensifies for Suspect in Charlie Kirk's Fatal Shooting at Utah Valley University
Authorities are actively searching for the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University.
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The incident occurred as Kirk, 31, addressed an audience of approximately 3,000 attendees. A single shot struck him in the neck, leading to his death.
Authorities believe the shooter fired from a rooftop on the university campus before fleeing the scene. The FBI has released images of a person of interest, described as a college-aged individual wearing dark clothing, including a black backpack and a shirt with an American flag print. A high-powered bolt-action rifle, suspected to be the weapon used, was recovered in a nearby wooded area.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the act, labeling it a "political assassination." He emphasized the state's commitment to justice, stating,
"I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will find you. We will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law."
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual responsible. Investigators have received over 7,000 tips and conducted approximately 200 interviews as the manhunt enters its third day.
The shooting has sparked a national conversation about political violence. President Donald Trump announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Leaders across the political spectrum have condemned the violence, with former President Joe Biden stating,
"There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now."
Utah Valley University has closed its campus and canceled classes until further notice. Vice President Val Peterson expressed condolences, saying,
"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Charlie Kirk. We express our sincere condolences to the Kirk family."
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
