Afghanistan is located near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making it prone to seismic activity. In October 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the country, with the Taliban government estimating at least 4,000 fatalities, while the U.N. reported about 1,500 deaths. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Afghanistan's recent history.
