Xi Jinping Calls for Enhanced Role of SCO in Regional Stability
At the SCO summit in Tianjin, President Xi Jinping emphasized the organization's increased responsibility in maintaining regional peace and promoting development amid global uncertainties.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to assume a greater role in safeguarding regional peace and stability, as well as promoting the development and prosperity of its member states. Addressing approximately 20 world leaders at a welcome banquet during the SCO summit in Tianjin, Xi highlighted the organization's mission to build consensus and stimulate cooperative efforts among its members.
The two-day summit, held in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, brings together leaders from nearly 20 nations, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The SCO, established in 2001, has expanded its focus from security and counter-terrorism to encompass economic and military cooperation, now comprising 10 permanent members and 16 observer and dialogue partners.
Xi's remarks come amid China's efforts to present itself as a key leader of the developing world. Analysts suggest that the SCO summit provides Beijing an opportunity to build solidarity with the Global South, especially as the United States under President Donald Trump shows signs of retreating from its global leadership role and engages in a worldwide trade war.
The summit also serves as a platform for China to reinforce its vision of a multipolar global order. Despite the group's expanded membership, its objectives and cohesion remain subjects of discussion. The summit is expected to promote economic cooperation and military collaboration, with China emphasizing connections among member and partner states.
