Ukraine Investigates Parubiy's Assassination; Kharkiv Opens Underground Schools Amid Conflict

Summary

Ukrainian authorities are probing the assassination of former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy, suspecting Russian involvement, while Kharkiv inaugurates underground schools to ensure children's safety during ongoing hostilities.

Ukrainian authorities are investigating the assassination of Andriy Parubiy, a former parliamentary speaker and prominent political figure, who was shot dead in Lviv on 30 August 2025. The attack occurred around 10:35 a.m. on Yefremov Street. A suspect was apprehended in the Khmelnytskyi region by 1 September. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing as a "terrible murder" and emphasized the urgency of capturing the perpetrator.

Parubiy, aged 54, played significant roles in Ukraine's political landscape, notably during the 2013–2014 pro-European Union protests. He served as the speaker of Ukraine’s parliament from 2016 to 2019 and was known for his staunch opposition to Russian influence.

In a separate development, Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has inaugurated underground schools to ensure children's safety amid ongoing Russian attacks. On 1 September 2025, approximately 17,000 students began the academic year in these specially prepared facilities, some located as deep as three stories below ground. Mayor Ihor Terekhov highlighted the proximity of these schools to the Russian border and their capacity, with some accommodating up to 1,500 students.

Parents expressed relief and hope, emphasizing the importance of returning to some semblance of normalcy despite the ongoing conflict. The underground learning environment aims to preserve children's education and emotional well-being amidst persistent threats.
