Israel-Iran Conflict Continues as International Community Seeks Resolution

Résumé

The United Nations Security Council convened on Friday in New York to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, now entering its second week.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported conducting airstrikes within Iran, targeting military installations as part of Operation 'Rising Lion.' Approximately 60 Israeli fighter jets participated, focusing on missile storage facilities, air defense systems, and radar installations in central Iran. An Israeli aircraft also targeted three Iranian F-14 fighter jets on the ground. IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin stated that the operation aimed to disrupt Iran's missile production and launch capabilities, asserting that these capabilities have been significantly diminished. The IDF announced the death of Saeed Izadi, a senior Quds Force commander associated with Hamas and the October 7, 2023, attack. Izadi was reportedly involved in smuggling weapons and funds to Hamas. Documents obtained in Gaza indicated his connection to Mohammad Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader also killed by the IDF. In a separate operation, the IDF reported the death of Behnam Shahriyari, who was responsible for supplying arms to Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed groups in the region. Over the past week, Iran launched more than 1,000 drones toward Israel, according to the IDF, with most intercepted outside Israeli airspace. Israeli military forces continue to target unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) infrastructure, reportedly destroying approximately 950 drones before launch. In northern operations, the Israeli Navy and Air Force targeted Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, including rocket sites and structures associated with the Radwan force.
