Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks August 12-13 Amid Bright Moonlight

Summary

The Perseid meteor shower will peak on August 12-13, 2025, with viewing conditions affected by a bright waning gibbous moon.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is set to peak on the nights of August 12 and 13, 2025. Typically, this event offers up to 75 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. However, this year's display coincides with a waning gibbous moon, approximately 84% illuminated, which may obscure all but the brightest meteors.

Despite the moon's brightness, observers might still witness some of the more luminous meteors, especially in clear skies. To enhance viewing opportunities, experts recommend facing away from the moon, directing attention toward the northeast where the Perseids' radiant point lies in the constellation Perseus.

The Perseids originate from debris left by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As Earth passes through this debris, particles burn up upon entering the atmosphere, creating the visible streaks known as meteors.

For optimal viewing, it's advisable to find a dark location away from city lights, allow time for eyes to adjust to the darkness, and avoid using phones or other light sources. While the peak nights may be challenging due to moonlight, the Perseids will remain active until August 23, offering additional opportunities for observation as the moon wanes.
