Octopus Flexibility Study Informs Rescue Robot Design
Researchers at the National University of Singapore reported that common and Mayan octopuses can navigate tight openings by pulling themselves through, and they plan to apply this strategy to future search-and-rescue robots. Earlier reports said the team was studying the animals’ ability to squeeze through narrow gaps to inspire more adaptable rescue robots. The work builds on observations that octopuses use flexible bodies to overcome confined spaces.
