Mississippi Senate race remains undecided as mail ballots could tip the balance
Incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith held a narrow lead over Democrat Scott Colom in Mississippi on November 5, with thousands of absentee and provisional ballots still to be counted after the Supreme Court upheld the state's mail-in ballot law. Earlier counts had shown Colom taking a slim advantage, at one point leading by 65 votes and later by 1,138 votes as 96 % of ballots were tallied.
Republican officials blamed the shift on President Trump's absence from the ballot and the war in Iran, while independent candidate Ty Pinkins said his votes, largely from Republican-leaning areas, may have helped Colom. The race has stayed within a few hundred votes throughout the count.
