Democrats Outline Broad Oversight Agenda as New Congressional Majority Takes Shape
With Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, lawmakers plan extensive investigations into the Trump administration’s actions, ranging from the Epstein case to immigration, public health and foreign policy.
Democrats who gained control of both chambers of Congress said they will use their investigatory powers to scrutinize a wide array of issues tied to President Trump’s second term. The party’s agenda includes probing the handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s case, the president’s business interests, immigration enforcement, public-health policies and the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Rep. Robert Garcia, a California Democrat expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, warned that the new majority will “lawyer up” as it prepares to issue subpoenas and compel testimony. Committee staffers indicated that the investigation into Epstein will focus on alleged ties between the financier and the president, with Rep. Jamie Raskin noting that evidence from women contradicts Trump’s claim that he knew Epstein only “like everybody in Palm Beach.”
Democrats also plan to examine whether administration officials have advanced the president’s financial ventures, including the social-media platform Truth Social and various cryptocurrency projects linked to his family. Garcia has linked rising living-cost pressures to what he describes as “dark money” and potential insider trading by members of Congress.
On immigration, House Democrats intend to hold hearings on alleged misconduct by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, following a field hearing in Austin, Texas, that highlighted incidents of violence. Rep. Pramila Jayapal said ICE is “a lawless, rogue agency” and pledged continued oversight of the administration’s deportation policies.
Public-health oversight will target the Trump administration’s approach to disease research and infrastructure, with particular attention to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The party also plans to challenge the president’s use of executive authority for projects such as renovations to the White House East Wing and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, arguing that Congress alone controls federal spending.
In foreign-policy matters, Democrats aim to assert congressional authority over the war in Iran, pressing the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the conflict’s cost and seeking a formal authorization of military force.
Technology billionaire Elon Musk, a major Republican donor, is also on the oversight list. House Democrats wrote that they will closely examine federal funding to Musk’s companies and assess whether contractual obligations are being met, citing recent service disruptions that affected Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The comprehensive oversight plan reflects the Democratic majority’s focus on accountability across multiple domains as President Trump continues his second term.
