Gina Hinojosa defeats Greg Abbott in Texas gubernatorial race

Résumé

Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the Texas governor's race with about 57% of the vote, becoming the first Latina governor of the state and ending three decades of Republican control.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa secured a decisive victory over incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott in the Texas governor's race, with the Associated Press reporting roughly 57% of the vote for Hinojosa and 41% for Abbott. In her victory speech, Hinojosa said, "Here's what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you. As your governor, I will never forget it."

Abbott, conceding the race, acknowledged the remaining uncounted votes but said the math made a win impossible, adding, "It has been the joy of my life to have the opportunity to be the governor of the great state of Texas."

Political scientists noted the result could be a significant shift in a state long dominated by Republicans, though they cautioned that sustaining Democratic control will depend on effective governance and legislative cooperation. Professor David Crockett said a Democratic governor could use veto power but would need to find common ground with the Republican-controlled legislature to pass major policies.

Hinojosa, a former Austin school board president, campaigned on expanding public-school funding, opposing private-school vouchers, and addressing household costs. She proposed cutting corporate subsidies to fund property-tax relief and a one-time $1,500 payment to households from the state's Rainy Day Fund. Abbott had supported a voucher program launched in 2025 and had signed an $8.5 billion school-funding package the same year.

The win also coincided with Democratic gains in other Texas races, including a U.S. Senate seat. Analysts suggested the national political climate, including sentiment toward President Donald Trump, could have influenced voter behavior. Hinojosa is set to take office in January, becoming the first Democratic governor of Texas since 1995.
