Ukraine says air-alert app hacked after false nuclear and chemical warnings

Résumé

Ukraine’s air force reported that a cyber intrusion caused its air-alert app to issue false nuclear, chemical and missile warnings, while Russia claimed a similar attack on its emergency-alert app.

Ukraine’s air force said its nationwide air-alert application was likely compromised after it briefly displayed false warnings of nuclear and chemical threats, as well as a message about a Russian hypersonic Oreshnik missile. > "The air alert app appears to have been subjected to enemy influence. There is no radiation threat! Stay calm and follow our updates on our channel!" the air force posted on Telegram.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergencies later reported that its own mobile application for drone-attack alerts had been hit by a cyber-attack that allowed false information to be sent to the public.

In the southern Kherson region, a temporary local ceasefire ended on Sunday, prompting the regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin to urge residents to remain vigilant and respond quickly to any warnings of Russian attacks. Ukrainian officials said 167 people were evacuated from the area after the ceasefire expired.

A Ukrainian officer, speaking anonymously to AFP, warned that fighting could intensify after the truce, noting that Russian forces had used the lull to reposition troops, stockpile ammunition and conduct surveillance with drones.

Separately, Ukraine has continued strikes on Russian oil refineries despite pressure from President Donald Trump ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Russian state media reported that Ukrainian long-range drones set fire to the Kstovo refinery in Nizhny Novgorod oblast following a strike on a Rosneft facility in Samara oblast.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Fox News that Ukraine would halt attacks on Russian refineries if Washington supplied Patriot interceptor missiles, adding that Kyiv could find funding for the systems. The U.S. State Department announced approval of a sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine, though delivery timelines remain uncertain.
