OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Criticizes Personal Use of DRAM Amid Rising Demand

Resumen

Sam Altman told a podcast that allocating scarce DRAM to individual devices is inefficient and that centralized cloud usage would better serve global demand.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said on the Cheeky Pint podcast that the widespread use of DRAM in personal computers is inefficient given the component’s limited supply and high demand from AI data centers. He argued that many users assume local AI inference will reduce the need for large data-center resources, but "from a global allocation perspective, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," Altman said. He added that maximizing utilization in the cloud would better address the supply-constrained environment. The comments came as DRAM prices have risen sharply, driven in part by the expanding infrastructure needs of AI companies.

Altman’s remarks reflect concerns that the growing demand for AI compute could further tighten component markets and increase costs for consumer electronics. Analysts note that while centralized cloud services can improve resource efficiency, the shift also raises questions about user control and reliance on proprietary platforms.
