Trump Urges Ceasefire and Trade Talks Between Thailand and Cambodia Amid Border Clashes
US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia following recent border clashes, and indicated willingness to resume trade talks once hostilities end. The intervention comes as new US tariffs on both countries are set to take effect.
US President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after recent border clashes resulted in at least 33 deaths and the displacement of thousands. Trump stated on social media that both countries had agreed to meet promptly to work towards a ceasefire and peace. He also expressed interest in resuming trade negotiations with both nations, but said discussions would only proceed once fighting had stopped.
Thailand's acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, confirmed that Thailand agreed in principle to a ceasefire, but said the country "would like to see the sincerity of the Cambodian side in this matter." Earlier, Cambodia had called for an immediate ceasefire. The two countries have each accused the other of initiating the recent violence, with Thailand citing Cambodian drone surveillance near the border and Cambodia alleging Thai troops violated a prior agreement by advancing on a disputed temple.
Trump's involvement comes ahead of new US tariffs on goods from Thailand and Cambodia, set to take effect on August 1. Unless an agreement is reached, US businesses importing from the two countries will face a 36% tax. It remains unclear how Trump became involved, as Thailand's foreign minister recently stated that third-party mediation was not needed. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously offered to facilitate talks between the two sides. The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has historical roots dating back over a century.
