Sir Patrick Stewart, acclaimed actor and theatre champion, dies at 86

Résumé

Sir Patrick Stewart died at 86 after a brief illness with Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia, prompting tributes that highlighted his career and support for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and domestic-abuse charity Unique Voice.

Sir Patrick Stewart died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday at the age of 86 following a brief illness with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. The actor, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School from age 17, was widely praised for his contributions to stage and screen, including iconic roles such as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

"He knew he stood upon a stage and he used that stage on behalf of others countless times," a spokesperson for the charity Unique Voice said, noting Stewart's long-standing patronage of the organization, which runs drama workshops for children about domestic violence.

Stewart's seven-decade career earned him multiple awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. He was also a patron of the local theatre company Unique Voice and remained proud of his Bristol Old Vic heritage, according to school principal Stuart Harvey, who called his career "exceptional" and a testament to rigorous classical training.

Former fellow alumnus and theatre director Sir Gregory Doran recalled Stewart's performance in a 2006 production of Antony and Cleopatra, saying the actor "restored the magnificence" of the role and that his solid training allowed him to excel in both Shakespeare and science-fiction roles. Doran announced that a later performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Tobacco Factory would be dedicated to Stewart's memory.

Beyond his artistic work, Stewart was an outspoken campaigner against domestic abuse, drawing on personal experience from his childhood. He became a voluntary patron of Unique Voice in 2011, with co-director Krystal Keeley describing him as a "perfect fit" and an "amazing inspiration" for the charity's mission.
