Red Wings suspend Dylan Larkin after he requests trade, sparking speculation on his future
Dylan Larkin officially left the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, prompting the club to suspend him without pay. The move has intensified trade rumors involving several NHL teams and raised questions about the franchise’s rebuilding plans.
The Detroit Red Wings announced Thursday that former captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade and will no longer play for the club. In response, the organization placed Larkin on an unpaid suspension and removed his nameplate from the dressing room.
Larkin’s agent Pat Brisson met with the player shortly after the trade deadline and told him the forward "had enough" with the situation. Sources say the pair may already have an offer they consider acceptable, though interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has not confirmed any deal.
The trade market appears wide, with interest reported from Montreal, Buffalo, St. Louis, Florida and Vegas, though salary-cap constraints could limit options. Minnesota is rumored to be considering a package that includes forward Danila Yurov, while Carolina is viewed as a stylistic fit for Larkin but has not indicated willingness to meet the price.
Detroit’s broader strategy remains unclear. The club recently signed forward Alex DeBrincat and is still searching for a president of hockey operations, signaling a desire to improve the roster while also securing a return for Larkin and defense prospect Simon Edvinsson, whose contract situation is set to be decided by Dec. 1.
At a Thursday media conference, interim GM Horcoff said the team will act only when a trade aligns with the Red Wings’ best interests, emphasizing the organization’s focus on returning to playoff contention in its new arena.
