Microsoft shares slip below $530 as investors weigh lower-than-expected capex
Microsoft reported earnings and revenue that beat expectations, but the stock fell after the company disclosed capital spending below analyst forecasts, raising concerns about future infrastructure demand.
Microsoft's shares rose above $550 following the release of quarterly results that showed revenue of $90.6 billion and net income of $36.6 billion, but the rally reversed sharply, pushing the price below $530. The decline came after the company announced total capital expenditure and finance leases of $45.2 billion, roughly 30% higher than a year earlier but short of the consensus estimate of $50.7 billion.
Analysts noted that the shortfall could signal a slower pace of infrastructure expansion, prompting investors to reassess the timing and potential returns of the massive spending across the technology sector. While Microsoft’s cloud revenue grew 30% year over year to $63.9 billion, CFO Amy Hood said the results exceeded expectations for revenue, operating income and earnings per share. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted ongoing efforts to improve computing capability, customer choice, security and cost efficiency.
Despite the strong financial performance, market participants expressed a need for clearer evidence that demand will translate into returns on the company's infrastructure investments. The broader debate over the sustainability of large-scale tech spending was echoed by comments from industry figures, including Elon Musk, who warned that many new cloud providers could face consolidation pressures.
Microsoft also reported mixed results in its Devices and Consumer segment, with revenue falling 3% year over year to $15.5 billion, and declines in Xbox content and services and Windows OEM sales. The company is developing a custom Maia 300 processor aimed at improving computing efficiency, though the initiative requires significant investment before financial benefits can be realized.
Regulatory scrutiny in the United Kingdom and competition from rivals such as Google Workspace add further considerations for the firm. As the stock tests technical support levels around the 20-day moving average, investors will watch for any signs that the company can sustain growth above the $530 threshold and re-establish momentum toward the $550 resistance zone.
