Republican leaders in Washington questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the Iran conflict and other defense decisions as the party grappled with losses in the recent midterm elections, reports said on 5 November. President Donald Trump earlier said he had confidence in Hegseth while rumors circulated about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a possible replacement.

Representative Thomas Massie announced he would reintroduce impeachment articles against Hegseth if the secretary remained in office when Congress reconvened. Democrats indicated they could pursue impeachment if they regained control of the House, and the House was set to consider an impeachment resolution targeting the Pentagon chief.
