Arsenal announced it will appeal the straight red card shown to 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman in the Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Fleetwood took an early lead in the 20th minute and the match finished 1-1 before Arsenal were eliminated 5-3 on penalties. After the loss, manager Mikel Arteta said his brief comment to Dowman had been pre-planned, a remark former player Paul Merson called inappropriate for a teenager.
