Villa Vie Residences suspends global cruise operations due to soaring fuel costs

Villa Vie Residences halted its residential cruise program, citing sharply higher fuel expenses and is arranging disembarkation for passengers while exploring restructuring options.

Villa Vie Residences announced it has suspended operations of its Villa Vie Odyssey residential cruise ship, attributing the decision to sharply rising fuel costs in the regions where the vessel was sailing. The company is coordinating the disembarkation of residents currently aboard the ship in Cambodia and is seeking temporary housing solutions while it evaluates options for restructuring and recapitalization.

"Fuel costs have risen sharply in the regions where the company has been operating," the company said in a news release. "On an equivalent per-cabin basis, monthly fuel expense that historically averaged approximately $1,800 has recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. The company cannot simply pass increases of that scale on to residents, and the resulting shortfall has placed its current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure."

The release added that recent measures to reduce fuel consumption, such as spending additional time in port, had not sufficiently offset the higher expenses. Villa Vie did not immediately comment on whether residents would receive refunds or other compensation.

The suspension follows a July announcement that the company planned to add a second residential cruise ship, at a time when more than 85% of the Odyssey’s residences had been sold. The Odyssey began a three-and-a-half-year circumnavigation in October 2024 after multiple delays; the voyage was originally slated for May 2024.

Founder Mike Petterson previously noted the challenges of reactivating a 30-year-old vessel that had been laid up for four years, describing the ship as effectively new after extensive certification work. The Odyssey was formerly the MS Braemar before being purchased by Villa Vie in 2023.
