Villa Vie Odyssey suspends operations in Cambodia amid soaring fuel costs
Villa Vie Residences has halted its residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, citing unsustainable fuel expenses and launching a 60-day restructuring effort.
Villa Vie Residences announced on 27 October 2026 that its residential cruise vessel Villa Vie Odyssey will enter a temporary lay-up in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after monthly fuel costs rose sharply while the ship was operating in Asia. The company said the increase, which it estimates now runs between $6,000 and $8,000 per cabin per month, made the current operating model financially untenable.
Residents aboard the ship were instructed to disembark by 2:00 PM on the day of the announcement, with shuttle services available until the following evening to help retrieve personal belongings. In an internal memo attributed to CEO Kathy Villalba, the company explained that it could not secure sufficient fuel and that crew would remain on board to maintain essential systems.
"Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations. As a result, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup this afternoon, with crew remaining onboard to maintain the vessel and its essential systems," the memo read.
Villa Vie Residences said it is coordinating temporary accommodation for displaced residents and is exploring restructuring and new financing options over the next 60 days, though it cautioned that no outcome is guaranteed. The statement did not specify the length of the lay-up or any financial assistance that might be offered to affected residents.
The suspension also puts future passengers at risk of losing prepaid travel funds. One prospective traveler, who had booked a November-December voyage at $9,000 per person, expressed concern about recovering the payment.
"I want my money back. I can’t afford to lose it," the passenger said.
The company has not confirmed reports that an additional $360,000 was needed to purchase fuel or that residents were asked for extra contributions. Unverified online claims about unpaid crew wages and large individual investments have also circulated, but no official documentation has been provided.
Villa Vie Odyssey, formerly the Braemar of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, began service in October 2024 after a delayed launch and has faced multiple itinerary changes and service issues. The current lay-up represents the most serious disruption to the residential cruising programme since its inception.
Villa Vie Residences said further updates will be issued as significant developments occur.
