Nithya Raman Takes Lead Over Karen Bass in LA Mayoral Race
Councilmember Nithya Raman held a narrow lead over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral election, with mail-in ballots still to be counted, the Los Angeles Times reported on November 5. Earlier that night, initial returns had shown Bass ahead by a small margin, but the gap was slim enough that later ballots could alter the outcome, according to the same newspaper. A University of California-Berkeley poll released in late October had found Bass and Raman tied at 40% support among likely voters, with 19% undecided.
The Guardian had earlier highlighted Raman’s progressive challenge to Bass amid city-wide affordability concerns. Former candidate Rick Caruso also announced he would vote for Bass, citing recent collaboration and her readiness to lead the city.
