Democratic Heavyweights Back El-Sayed as Trump Targets Michigan Senate Candidate
The Guardian reported on 30 October that prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders, publicly endorsed progressive Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan U. S. Senate race as President Donald Trump intensified personal attacks against the candidate. Earlier polling had shown El-Sayed ahead of Republican Mike Rogers.
According to a WDIV and Detroit News telephone poll of likely voters on 28 October, the Democrat was leading, and a Mitchell Research poll for CBS Detroit released on 29 October gave him 51% to Rogers’s 44%, widening the gap to seven points. The Detroit News also noted that civil-rights lawyer Jason Turkish, a Democratic donor engaged to former Senate candidate Haley Stevens, announced his support for Rogers, citing concerns over El-Sayed’s remarks on Israel. CBS reported that El-Sayed was under investigation over his family’s past affiliations and his own statements, while polls indicated a narrow lead over Rogers.
