Red Wall MPs pressure Burnham to cut welfare spending
Northern Labour MPs warned Labour leader Andy Burnham that failing to reduce the welfare bill could cost them seats to Reform UK, citing the Office for Budget Responsibility’s projection of rising welfare outlays. Burnham had earlier said the government aims to cut welfare spending as quickly as possible while rejecting crude cuts, and he acknowledged that external geopolitical tensions and the party’s 2024 manifesto limited the scope of his first budget, which fell short of the radical reforms he had promised. A report on the upcoming 2026 Autumn Budget said it would raise the tax-free allowance for low-income pensioners and propose changes to disability benefits and universal credit for younger claimants.
