United flight returns to Las Vegas after security concern, delays passengers overnight
A United Airlines Boeing 737 turned back to Las Vegas shortly after takeoff on Oct. 24 due to a reported security issue, resulting in an overnight delay for about 150 passengers.
United Airlines flight 1681 departed Las Vegas for Newark on Oct. 24 at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time. About an hour after takeoff, the Boeing 737 returned to Harry Reid International Airport. The airline cited a "potential security concern" but did not detail the nature of the issue.
KSNV reported that airport officials said the return followed "a report of a passenger disturbance," while the airport confirmed the flight turned back for security reasons and referred the matter to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which did not comment.
No injuries were reported among the 150 passengers and six crew members. Because the crew reached their maximum allowable duty time, the flight experienced a crew timeout and was delayed overnight. It departed again on Oct. 25 around 7 a.m. and arrived in Newark around 3 p.m. ET, more than eight hours later than scheduled.
