Phantom Blade Zero scores 88 Metacritic, but performance issues persist
Phantom Blade Zero earned an 88 Metascore on PC and PS5, with praise for its combat and boss fights, while reviewers noted storytelling flaws and variable performance.
Phantom Blade Zero has opened to strong critical reception, holding an 88/100 Metacritic rating on both PC and PS5 based on 27 and 26 reviews respectively. Major outlets such as IGN, Push Square and TheSixthAxis gave the game 9 out of 10, and VGC rated it 4 out of 5, highlighting the fluid martial-arts combat, diverse weapon options and boss encounters.
GamesRadar+ suggested the title could contend for Game of the Year, citing its exploration elements. However, some critics pointed to weaknesses: Push Square criticized the narrative, while VGC described the characters as underdeveloped and the level design as overly linear. A review from Critical Hits in Brazil noted repetitive combat encounters and empty revisited areas due to non-respawning enemies.
Performance reports differ between platforms. On PC, Wccftech recorded around 100 FPS at 4K with High settings and DLSS Quality on an RTX 4080, but performance fell to the high 50s with ray tracing and to about 30 FPS with path tracing, with only minor stuttering observed. In contrast, Glitched reported significant frame-pacing and camera stutter on an RTX 5080 despite reaching roughly 60 FPS with maximum settings and path tracing.
PS5 performance was generally steadier. TheSixthAxis found smooth gameplay in Performance Mode on the standard PS5, and Push Square achieved mostly stable 60 FPS on a PS5 Pro with ray tracing, though some boss fights caused slowdowns. Insider Gaming observed frame-rate drops mainly in heavy-rain sections, while Creative Bloq reported notable slowdowns during combat even without ray tracing. S-Game has issued a patch to address several technical issues, though its impact has not been independently verified.
The game is scheduled for release on PC and PS5 on 29 October 2026.
