Delhi to Bar Non-BS-VI Vehicles Registered Outside the Capital Starting November
From November 1, Delhi will deny entry to non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the city, a measure that will stay in effect until January 31, 2027, to curb winter pollution.
Delhi will begin barring entry to petrol and diesel vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards and are registered outside the National Capital Territory on November 1. The restriction, part of a winter pollution-control plan, will remain in force until January 31, 2027.
Transport department estimates indicate that more than one million vehicles in the surrounding cities of Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad fall below BS-VI norms. In Gurugram and Faridabad, about 200,000 vehicles are non-compliant, with roughly 70% classified as BS-III or BS-IV. Uttar Pradesh’s border cities have higher numbers, with Noida and Greater Noida together accounting for over 400,000 non-BS-VI vehicles, primarily BS-IV petrol cars, and Ghaziabad adding another 400,000.
The rule targets commuters and commercial traffic that regularly cross into Delhi for work or business, though exemptions apply to CNG and electric vehicles, ambulances, fire tenders and other essential-service vehicles. Vehicles registered in Delhi are not subject to this specific ban, though they continue to be subject to existing pollution and age-related regulations.
Border checkpoints will employ AI-driven automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and dedicated lanes to identify non-compliant vehicles. Authorities are also enhancing physical enforcement at key entry points, especially on routes from Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad.
