Canadian Crime Stoppers Moves to Phone-Only Tips After Data Breach
The Canadian Crime Stoppers Association said it has instructed its chapters across Canada to accept anonymous tips only by telephone after a cyberattack on the U. S. -based Navigate360 tip-management platform exposed tipper data. The move follows earlier suspensions by several police services. The Anishinabek Police Service announced it was halting its partnership with Crime Stoppers, saying no police systems were compromised.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service also temporarily stopped its involvement. CBC reported that at least 11 Crime Stoppers programs and 24 police services had paused tip intake after the breach revealed more than 1. 5 million tips, and Navigate360 confirmed the hack. Global News noted that some police forces continued to promote Crime Stoppers despite the breach.
