Avigdor Liberman ends opposition contacts, backs Netanyahu unity government
Avigdor Liberman, chairman of the Yisrael Beytenu party, said on 29 October that he had stopped contacting opposition figures Naftali Bennett and Gadi Eisenkot and was urging the formation of a unity government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, according to The Jerusalem Post. Earlier in the week, the joint Bennett-Lapid list campaigned on a platform that included a commission of inquiry into the Oct. 7 attacks, term limits for prime ministers and universal conscription, as reported by JNS. org.
Former prime minister Naftali Bennett also launched a comeback campaign emphasizing expanded Abraham Accords cooperation with Arab states, a renewed partnership with President Donald Trump and a domestic reform agenda, Fox News noted. Hindustan Times added that Bennett had formed a joint opposition alliance with Yair Lapid ahead of the 27 October Knesset elections, seeking to limit the prime minister’s tenure and bar candidates under criminal investigation. The Jerusalem Post later reported that the anti-Netanyahu coalition, projected to hold 48 seats, was considering Lapid for the Knesset speaker role if it formed a government.
