B.C. NDP leader David Eby steps down after election loss

Resumen

David Eby resigned as leader of the British Columbia NDP following the party's defeat in the provincial election, citing responsibility for the outcome and the need for new leadership.

David Eby announced his resignation as leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party on Saturday night, less than two hours after election results began to be reported. While retaining his seat in Vancouver-Point Grey, Eby addressed party members at the downtown Vancouver headquarters and congratulated Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson on the party's majority win.

"Some of the hardest-working MLAs I know for their communities were not elected tonight," Eby said, adding that it "breaks my heart" and that he accepts full responsibility for the result.

He highlighted projects launched under the NDP government, including the new St. Paul’s Hospital, the Sen̓áḵw rental housing development, and the Broadway subway line, describing his tenure as "the honour of my life".

Eby said he would resign with a "heavy heart" and emphasized the need for new leadership within the party. He concluded by expressing a desire to spend more time with his family, thanking his wife Cailey before leaving the stage.

At 10:30 p.m., preliminary counts showed the Conservatives leading or winning in 64 ridings, the NDP in 27, and the Greens securing two seats.
