Carrick to remain Manchester United manager for Chelsea match
Manchester United will keep interim manager Michael Carrick in charge for the upcoming Premier League game against Chelsea, despite a poor start to the season.
Manchester United confirmed that Michael Carrick will continue as manager for the club's Saturday fixture at Chelsea. The 45-year-old, who took interim charge in January and was appointed permanently in May, will have another chance to improve results after United's eight-match winless streak across all competitions.
United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth on Sunday, leaving the team just above the relegation zone and prompting speculation about a possible replacement. Sources said former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and ex-Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann were among those being considered, but the club opted to retain Carrick for the Chelsea game.
Carrick, who oversaw training on Tuesday, addressed the situation in a Sky Sports interview, saying, "> It wasn't a farewell from me. I have mixed emotions for the players and supporters. The results and performances have not been good enough, and we need time to digest the situation."
United's director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada were observed at the training ground on Monday, with Carrick leaving later in the day. Potential candidates such as Howe, who left Newcastle last summer, and Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany's 2026 World Cup exit, remain linked to the club, though contractual issues could affect any move.
