Oregon's Playoff Hopes Fade After Third Loss to Illinois
The Oregon Ducks fell to Illinois 21-10, marking their third defeat and ending their chances for a College Football Playoff berth, while analysts assess the impact on other contenders.
The Oregon Ducks saw their College Football Playoff aspirations end on Saturday after a 21-10 road loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini. The defeat was the Ducks' first conference road loss since joining the Big Ten and snapped a 61-game streak of scoring more than ten points. Injuries have kept quarterback Dante Moore sidelined and limited the availability of key receivers, contributing to the team's struggles.
Illinois, despite losing starting quarterback Katin Houser to injury in its previous game, relied on true-freshman Michael Clayton, who threw two second-half touchdowns to help the Illini rally from an early deficit. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney crafted a game plan that leveraged both Clayton and mobile backup Carson Boyd.
Oregon's offense, under first-year coordinator Drew Mehringer, failed to maintain a consistent approach. Although the Ducks amassed 180 rushing yards, averaging over six yards per carry from Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill, they shifted to a pass-heavy strategy, with quarterback Dylan Raiola attempting 41 passes and taking three sacks.
"We saw a team with an experienced play-caller who knew what to do, and a team without one," wrote analyst Tom Fornelli, attributing part of Oregon's decline to the decision to promote Mehringer after Will Stein's departure.
The loss also prompts broader discussion about the College Football Playoff field, as the 2026 season approaches its midpoint. While three-loss teams have previously reached the playoff, analysts suggest Oregon is unlikely to be among them. Attention now turns to other programs, including Texas, which remains in contention after victories over Ohio State and Ole Miss, and Big 12 teams such as Texas Tech, BYU, and Arizona that are fighting for position.
In the Group of Six, Appalachian State's win over James Madison and Boise State's strong performance against Washington State keep those programs in the conversation for a potential playoff spot, though an undefeated record would likely be required.
