Quest Diagnostics reports unauthorized access to patient records

Résumé

Quest Diagnostics disclosed a cyber breach affecting its Quanum Lab Services Manager platform, with an unknown number of patient records potentially accessed.

Quest Diagnostics said it detected unauthorized access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager, an online system that allows certain clients to place test orders and view results. The company discovered the breach on Wednesday and reported it to federal law enforcement in a regulatory filing on Thursday.

The firm indicated that "certain patient records" may have been accessed, but the exact number of individuals and the specific data involved remain under investigation. Quest is working with external cybersecurity specialists to assess the incident.

The company has experienced prior breaches, including a 2016 incident that exposed lab results and contact information for about 34,000 people, and a 2019 breach affecting roughly 11.9 million patients through a billing collections service.

Quest confirmed to the Associated Press that the current breach is unrelated to recent vulnerabilities discovered in the PHP programming language, which have prompted broader security efforts across multiple sectors.
