Ben Simmons Tears Achilles in Kings Practice, Ending Comeback Attempt
The Sacramento Kings announced that forward Ben Simmons suffered a torn right Achilles tendon during a practice drill, requiring surgery and sidelining him for the upcoming season.
Ben Simmons tore his right Achilles tendon during a live drill in practice on Sunday, according to a statement from the Sacramento Kings. The injury will require surgery before the team's season opener on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, effectively ending Simmons' attempt to return to the NBA this year.
Simmons had signed a one-year veteran minimum contract with Sacramento in September after spending the previous season in rehabilitation. The 30-year-old Australian was aiming to revive his career following a year out due to back and leg injuries while he was with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft has previously earned three All-Star selections, Rookie of the Year honors and All-NBA and All-Defensive team recognitions. After missing the 2021-22 season for health reasons and a trade from Philadelphia, he played for the Brooklyn Nets and was later released by the Kings in February 2025. In two preseason games with Sacramento, he posted averages of 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
