Giants head coach John Harbaugh said on 19 October that New York is reviewing its quarterback options after J. J. McCarthy's strong performance in the 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints on 16 October.

NBC Sports reported that the Giants erased a 24-point fourth-quarter deficit before falling to the Saints. Coach Harbaugh had earlier substituted McCarthy for Jameis Winston, who threw two interceptions, according to Fox News. Yahoo Sports noted McCarthy's 269-yard comeback that sparked the review, and Big Blue View highlighted the team's ongoing rushing struggles.
