Eric Dane Recalls Near-Drowning Incident in ALS Memoir
Actor Eric Dane described a 2024 near-drowning episode that highlighted his ALS progression in an excerpt from his forthcoming memoir.
Actor Eric Dane disclosed that a vacation swim off Antigua in 2024 turned frightening when he realized he could no longer stay afloat, prompting his daughter Georgia and her friend to pull him to safety. The episode, detailed in an excerpt from his upcoming memoir "My Book of Days: A Memoir of Moments," served as a stark reminder of the impact of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on his physical abilities.
Dane said the incident led him to contact his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and the two shared an emotional conversation about the experience. He later used his public platform to raise awareness of ALS, a neurodegenerative disease he publicly disclosed in April 2025.
The memoir, released posthumously, reflects on family moments and the challenges he faced as the disease progressed, ultimately leading to his death at age 53.
