Ukraine drones hit oil terminal in St. Petersburg amid intensified strikes

Resumen

Ukrainian drones struck an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, causing a fire, one death and several injuries, as both sides increase attacks on each other's infrastructure.

Ukrainian drones attacked an oil terminal in St. Petersburg on Sunday, prompting emergency crews to fight fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot and nearby industrial warehouses. Governor Alexander Beglov reported that one person was killed and several others were injured.

The strike follows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's announcement that Ukraine had resumed attacks on Russian oil refineries after a brief pause. Zelenskyy said the pause ended following comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he had brokered an energy ceasefire and urged Ukraine to halt its attacks.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy cited recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, noting that Russian forces had deployed nearly 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 66 missiles in the past week. He urged the United States to recognize that Russia had not taken reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or diplomatic agreements.

Separately, Lithuanian authorities reported that a suspected drone may have self-detonated near the Latvian border, prompting NATO air-defence fighters to scramble. Lithuania’s defence minister, Robertas Kaunas, said the object likely entered from Poland and suggested a joint investigation with his Polish counterpart. Police investigations are also underway in eastern Poland after reports of an unidentified object entering its airspace following a Russian attack on Ukraine.
