Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin out for several weeks after shoulder injury

Summary

Quarterback Julian Sayin will miss multiple weeks following a shoulder injury sustained in the fourth quarter of Ohio State's 19-15 win over Indiana, coach Ryan Day said.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of the Buckeyes' 19-15 victory over Indiana and is expected to miss several weeks, head coach Ryan Day said after the game.

"I don't have a ton of details, but he'll probably be out for several weeks," Day told reporters. Sayin left the field without a helmet and with his right arm in a sling. True freshman Luke Fahey entered as his replacement with about seven and a half minutes remaining, while Ohio State maintained a four-point lead. Fahey attempted two passes, both incomplete, and lost two yards on two carries. Indiana's final drive ended when wide receiver Nick Marsh was ruled out of bounds on a potential game-winning catch after quarterback Josh Hoover threw a touchdown pass on fourth and four. The Buckeyes have a Week 8 bye before traveling to face USC on Oct. 31. In Sayin's absence, the quarterback depth chart is likely to feature Fahey and second-year player Tavien St. Clair, who competed for the backup role earlier in the season. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith said the bye will give him time to develop chemistry with Fahey. "Two weeks 'til we play a game, so it's going to take time to build that. I ain't going to say it's going to take one day. It's not that easy," Smith told reporters. Before his injury, Sayin had started all six games of Ohio State's 5-1 start, completing 71.2 percent of his passes for 1,772 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. He struggled against Indiana, completing 15 of 29 attempts for 235 yards and throwing multiple interceptions for the second consecutive game.
