Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli

Resumen

Philadelphia announced that quarterback Jalen Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli and will be placed on indefinite leave while receiving blood-thinner treatment.

Philadelphia said its starting quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his left leg and bilateral pulmonary emboli, conditions that require anticoagulant therapy and prohibit participation in contact activities. The team noted that Hurts is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations, but he will remain off the field until the treatment course is completed.

Hurts last appeared in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Oct. 11 and was held out of the subsequent 25-14 defeat to the Carolina Panthers after a follow-up scan showed the clot had migrated. The organization explained that earlier assessments in London had deemed the superficial clot safe for play, but later imaging in Philadelphia revealed the more serious deep-vein clot and lung emboli.

The club said the anticoagulant regimen typically lasts three to six months and that athletes cannot engage in contact sports while on blood thinners due to bleeding risks. No specific return date was provided, and the team indicated that Hurts’ absence will likely extend through the 2026 season. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, is expected to assume the starting role.
