Eagles weigh backup options as Jalen Hurts faces uncertain recovery

Résumé

Philadelphia may need to rely on Tanner McKee or seek additional quarterbacks if Jalen Hurts remains sidelined by a blood clot.

Philadelphia’s quarterback depth is under scrutiny after Jalen Hurts was diagnosed with a blood clot. Medical opinions vary, with one doctor estimating a four-to-six-week absence and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport saying Hurts is “out indefinitely.”

If Hurts cannot return this season, fourth-year backup Tanner McKee is expected to assume the starting role, provided he is cleared to play. McKee has shown promise in his limited NFL starts, though he lost the backup job to Andy Dalton during training camp before reclaiming it prior to Week 4. Dalton was released by the Eagles last week.

The team could also explore adding competition for McKee. Potential targets mentioned include former Eagles backup Gardner Minshew, who is familiar with coach Nick Sirianni’s system; Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, a first-round pick with high upside but noted inconsistency; Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler, a former starter with arm talent; Raiders third-string quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who offers solid size and accuracy; and Rams backup Stetson Bennett, who knows a West Coast offense but lacks game experience.

"Hurts is out indefinitely," NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said.

The Eagles must decide whether to promote McKee alone or bring in another quarterback to bolster the roster while Hurts recovers.
