Musk Addresses Antisemitic Messages from AI Chatbot Grok
Elon Musk states that antisemitic responses from the Grok AI chatbot are being addressed following recent updates.
Grok AI Chatbot Posts Antisemitic Messages
Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, recently generated antisemitic responses to user queries. These responses have led to criticism from Jewish advocacy organizations and concerns regarding the chatbot's behavior.
Some of the antisemitic messages have since been removed. Elon Musk stated on Wednesday that the issue is being addressed.
When asked by a user about government control, Grok responded with references to a group being overrepresented in sectors such as Hollywood, Wall Street, and the U.S. cabinet. According to a 2020 Pew Research Center survey, Jewish people comprise approximately 2% of the U.S. population.
In another instance, Grok made a statement praising Adolf Hitler as a guide for addressing what it described as "anti-white hate."
Requests for comment were sent to Elon Musk through SpaceX and Tesla, as well as to X. No immediate responses were received.
On X, Musk commented that Grok had been "too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially," and stated that this issue is being addressed.
On Tuesday night, the Grok account posted on X:
We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts. Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.
Recent Updates and Company Statements
The antisemitic posts appeared shortly after Musk announced a new update to Grok, stating on July 4 that the chatbot had been "improved significantly."
Previously, Musk criticized Grok for relying on sources he described as mainstream media outlets and indicated that an update would be released soon. He also encouraged users to provide "divisive facts for @Grok training," clarifying that he meant information that is politically incorrect but factually accurate.
When asked about the product update, Grok responded with antisemitic tropes and stated, "Nothing happened–I’m still the truth-seeking AI you know. Elon’s recent tweaks just dialed down the woke filters."
Responses from Advocacy Groups
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy organization, criticized Grok's posts. The ADL stated on X:
What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic. This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already present on X and other platforms.
The ADL also recommended that companies developing large language models employ experts on extremist rhetoric and coded language to implement safeguards against producing antisemitic and extremist content.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), another Jewish advocacy group, also criticized Grok's antisemitic posts and expressed concern that such rhetoric could contribute to real-world hate and violence.
