Economist Flags AI Boom Vulnerable to Debt and External Shocks
Economist Dario Perkins of Global Data. TS Lombard warned on 20 October that the AI sector’s rapid growth could be undermined by external shocks, rising debt among firms outside the major tech giants, and possible political backlash. The comment came after a series of market setbacks that began earlier in the week.
On 14 October, CoreWeave’s shares fell about 16% and yields on its 2031-2032 bonds rose to roughly 15%, reflecting investor worries over heavy borrowing for AI infrastructure, according to CNBC. Investors also pulled back from AI and semiconductor stocks, sending the Nasdaq Composite down more than 2% as reported by CBS News. Analysts cited the higher financing costs as a potential trigger for a broader AI market correction, noted Fortune.
