Justice Department warns California officials of criminal liability over mail ballots
The U. S. Justice Department warned Los Angeles County and California election officials that they could be charged as accomplices if they counted mail-in ballots the department says were cast by non-citizens, days before the midterm elections.
The warning followed a lawsuit the department filed seeking an injunction to halt counting of roughly 20,000 mail ballots it alleges were submitted by likely non-citizens. Earlier, the Justice Department had sent letters to state officials demanding a review of a list of potential non-citizen voters and the segregation of their ballots, and then gave officials 48 hours to verify the citizenship of those flagged voters.
