Apple launches Home Collection of smart-home devices and HomeView display

Résumé

Apple introduced a new line of smart-home hardware, co-developed with LG and Schneider Electric, alongside its first smart display, HomeView, emphasizing one-tap setup, privacy and Matter compatibility.

Apple announced a new lineup of smart-home products, called the Apple Home Collection, that includes cameras, a video doorbell, a smart lock, thermostats, sensors and a smart display named HomeView. The devices were co-developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric and are designed to work with Apple’s HomeKit and the Matter standard.

At a "Welcome home" event in New York, Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of product marketing for home, said the timing was driven by the availability of Matter and advances in Siri’s AI capabilities. > "With the magic of Siri AI, it comes together in a way that we haven’t been able to deliver before," Drance said.

Apple is positioning HomeView as a gateway for users to add additional devices, highlighting a one-tap setup that does not require separate accounts or apps. Drance noted that the devices integrate through Apple Home, use Thread for reliable connectivity, and feature end-to-end encryption so that only the user can access the data.

The hardware supports Matter and Thread, with the exception of cameras that rely on Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video. The lock includes hands-free Home Key unlocking via UWB, and the thermostats work with Apple’s Clean Energy Guidance and Adaptive Temperature features.

Apple expects the collection to appeal to existing Apple customers who have not yet added a smart lock or doorbell, offering a curated starter kit. Prices start at $200, and camera video storage requires an iCloud Plus subscription. Apple also announced a partnership with ADT to provide installation services through its retail stores.

Industry research cited by Parks Associates shows Apple Home trailing Amazon and Google in market share, but notes that many households are open to switching platforms if they can control all devices from a single interface. Apple’s new devices aim to simplify entry into a smart home while maintaining the company’s focus on privacy and seamless integration.
