BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier powers upset of No. 2 Notre Dame
BYU defeated No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 on 16 October in Provo, with quarterback Bear Bachmeier saying his play was decisive and recalling that he felt disrespected by the school during his high-school recruiting, USA Today reported. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman had warned that the high altitude in Provo would challenge his team, Deseret News noted.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake and three players said they respected the opponent and had prepared thoroughly, also Deseret News reported. Both programs expected a defensive battle, according to a later Deseret News preview. Athletic director Brian Santiago arranged the home game to give the Cougars a top-10 opponent and a chance to improve playoff prospects, CBS Sports said.
