Record Pacific Hurricane Season Overwhelms Mexican Coastal Communities
The Los Angeles Times reported that a record Pacific hurricane season, driven by a strong El Niño and warmer ocean temperatures linked to climate change, has left Mexican coastal communities coping with repeated damage and limited aid. Earlier in October, PBS said Category 4 Hurricane Simon moved parallel to the Pacific coast, prompting evacuations and shelter orders in Puerto Vallarta.
CBS News noted that the storm later weakened to Category 1, bringing heavy rain and flooding that killed five people, while The Guardian reported additional fatalities and infrastructure damage from both Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel. FOX Weather said Tropical Storm Trudy formed in the eastern Pacific and was expected to strengthen, and USA Today cited the National Hurricane Center’s forecast that Trudy could become a major hurricane by mid-October.
